Here's a question every Filipino household asks weekly: "Magkano na ang bigas?"
The answer usually comes after you're already at the palengke. The vendor tells you the price, you have no idea if it's fair, and you either haggle blind or just pay up.
But here's the thing — the government already publishes this information.
The Data Exists. It's Just Hard to Find.
The Department of Agriculture runs Bantay Presyo, which monitors wet-market prices for rice, fish, meat, vegetables, and fruits across regional markets. It's updated regularly.
The DTI publishes Suggested Retail Prices for branded grocery items — canned goods, instant noodles, coffee, detergent.
Both are public. Both are free. And both are buried in government bulletins, PDFs, and websites that nobody checks before heading to the market.
What I Built
Presyo is a free iOS app that puts all of that in your pocket:
- Palengke prices — rice, fish, meat, vegetables, and fruits from DA's Bantay Presyo, updated nightly
- Grocery SRPs — DTI Suggested Retail Prices for branded items, so you know when a store is overcharging
- Listahan — build your shopping list and Presyo totals what your basket should cost before you leave the house
- Palengke Mode — an offline, large-text interface designed for actually using the app at the market
- Price history — charts that show whether galunggong is going up or down
- Weekly updates — a notification when prices change, so you're never surprised
The app works in English, Filipino, Cebuano, and Bikol.
Why This Matters
Food prices hit Filipino families harder than almost anything else. When you're budgeting week to week, knowing that kangkong is 5 pesos cheaper at another market — or that the sari-sari store is charging 10 pesos over SRP — actually matters.
The information to shop smarter already exists. It just wasn't built for regular people. Presyo fixes that.
One note: Presyo is an independent app by Kanto Projects. It uses public data from the DA and DTI, but it's not affiliated with either agency.
